Bid to form Dutch Govt
NZPA-Reuter The Hague Queen Beatrix has named a senior Labour Party member of Parliament as a mediator to try to form a new Dutch Government, said an official announcement. Dr Jos van Kemenade. a 46-year-old former Education Minister, will act as official go-between as Labour tries to form a majority coalition with other parties.
Leaders of the main centre-Right parties, the Christian Democrats and Liberals, expected Labour's attempt to form a coalition to fail, said authoritative political sources.
The C.D.A. leader. Dries van Agt. and the Liberal
chief. Ed Nijpels. expected to be able to form an effective ruling coalition between their parties' said the sources.
Labour won the initiative in trying to form a coalition by becoming the largest partv in Parliament in the General Election last week. The centre-Right parties hold an over-all majority in the 150-seat second chamber which forms policy. The centre-Right coalition would be likely to accept the siting of N.A.T.O. nuclear missiles on Dutch soil, and also follow a tough economic policy of spending cuts and wage restraint.
