PA Auckland Dozens of thin men left Auckland for Rarotonga on Saturday evening after a close shave on top prepare them for parts as extras in the film. "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence.” The 99 extras, with another 21 “underfed" males who will leave today, will spend up to 10 days in Rarotonga for the first sessions of filming.
The film, which stars David Bowie and Tom Conti, , tells of conditions in a Second World War prisoner-of-war camp in Java. Filming will continue in New Zealand next month. The lure of an expensespaid trip to Rarotonga attracted 2000 hopefuls prepared to have their heads shaved. The target of 150 extras was not reached because too few were, lean enough.
