More water to Penrhyn

PA Auckland The 700 or so inhabitants of parched Penrhyn Island, about 600 miles north of Rarotonga, took delivery yesterday of their second load of fresh water, flown from Rarotonga by a Royal New Zealand Air Force Hercules. The islanders had only about 1200 gallons (5340 litres) left before the Hercules . made its first trip yesterday. The Hercules left Rarotonga again yesterday with a second load, which is expected to be enough until the Islands trader Manuvai leaves Rarotonga later this week with 8000 gallons (35,600 litres). Penrhyn has been .without rain for five months. Unless rain falls in two or three weeks the “water lift” may have to be repeated.
