Counties strong title favourite
PA Auckland Counties must be the warm favourite to capture the national rugby championship after its 14-10 win over Wellington at Pukekohe yesterday. But it was a near thing. Counties struggled ‘ to find rhythm in the first half and Wellington, on the basis of making fewer mistakes, stretched out to a 10-4 lead. But a penalty goal to Joe Harvey just before half-time reduced the margin and with 25 minutes to play Robert Kururangi scored a clever try to give Counties an 11-10
lead. With two minutes to go Counties .lifted the siege. Wellington were bustled into error, and from 41 metres Warren McLean kicked a penalty goal. Wellington should have done better with the steady stream of possession won by its pack, but the All Blacks. Bernie Fraser and Stuart Wilson played with an understandably distracted air. Scores'—Counties: M. Moore, R. Kururangi, tries; J. Harvey, W. McLean, pen; Wellington: J. Salmon, try; B. Cederwall, pen, dropped goal.
