Aust. league win
PA Auckland The Australian Schoolboys' rugby League side beat the Junior Kiwis, 31-13. at Carlaw: Park yesterday. The test tipped in Australia's favour when the tourists scored two converted tries in the last five minutes of the first half. The Australians, beaten 1016 by Auckland on Sunday, had earlier struggled to keep up with the Junior Kiwis who. with tries from Ricky Cowan and Joe Ropati. were leading 8-4. Only the accurate boot of Bronko Djura had kept the visitors from being dominated. His two penalties were the forerunner of six more
goals. In all he kicked four penalties and four conversions.
The two Australian converted tries enabled them to go into the second half with a 14-8 lead.
Half-hearted tackling by the Junior Kiwis, which had led to those tries, gave the Australians too much latitude in the second half. The extent to which the Junior Kiwis squandered their chances could be gauged from the possession they received from a 13-9 scrum advantage and the 1811 penalty count in their favour.
A second test will be played at Davies Park, Huntly, on Sunday. - i
