Koteka to prop in test
Paul Koteka will play his second test for the All Blacks when he packs down against Australia at Eden Park on Saturday. The chunky Waikato forward replaces Canterbury's John Ashworth, who vacated the loosehead prop position yesterday because of doubts over a recently damaged leg. Koteka. who performed well in the national trials
earlier this season, toured Rumania and France with the All Blacks last season. At the end of the tour he displaced Rod Ketels in the front row for the second French test, in Paris. Ashworth passed a fitness test on Tuesday, but decided yesterday not to take the risk of the leg injury recurring. “For the sake of the team, it is just not worth the risk,"
he said. "It could affect everyone, and that's not on.” Ashworth, who has played in 11 tests and is close to a century of appearances for Canterbury, hopes to be in fine fettle by the time of the Ranfurly Sheild match in Wellington on September 18. Greg Burgess (Auckland), who was dropped from the reserves after the second test, has been restored to his former position.
