PA Masterton Feilding's Don Johnstone set the pace on the first day of the 1982 Citizen jet boat marathon on the Ruarnahanga ■ River. near Masterton. yesterday. Johnstone, runner-up in the world championship in 1978. cruised home in his boat, Aorangi. in a time of 54 minutes 35 secs. 11 seconds
ahead of Rakaia's Mark Cromie in Commodore. The opening stage saw relatively slow times, except for a new record of 1 hour 2.l3secs set by John Watson (Christchurch) in the Savage marine class. Driving Motorgard 11. Watson took a shattering three minutes. 34 seconds off the old record of 1.5.47.
