Navratilova’s nightmare game
NZPA New York Four years after her upset victory in the semi-finals as an unknown 16-year-old. Pam Shriver once again ruined Martina Navratilova’s dreams of winning her first United States Open tennis championship women's singles title yesterday.
Shriver, the' seventh seed, brought to an end Navratilova's winning sequence with a 1-6. 7-6. 6-2 quarter-final triumph. Navratilova, the number one seed, crashed to her first loss in 41 matches and must now start her Grand Slam challenge all over again. The Wimbledon champion. Jimmy Connors, and Ilie Naslase renewed rivalry dating back to 1971. but the 36-year-old Nastase found the second-seeded and three-time champion too good. Connors
won their fourth round clasl 6-3. 6-3. 6-4.
Fourth seeded Guillermo Vilas, of Argentina, and an unseeded American amateur. Rodney Harmon. also reached the men's singles quarter-finals. It was the furthest Vilas has been since winning the tournament in 1977 on clay, and to do so he defeated 12th-seeded Steve Denton of Texas 3-6. 4-6. 6-3. 7-6. 6-3. Harmon finished off eighth-seeded Eliot Teltscher with an ace — his 15th in the match — to run out a 6-4. 46. 6-3. 3-6. 7-6 winner. • The women's quarter-final between defending champion and third seed Tracy Austin, of the United States, and fifth seed Hana Mandlikova. of Czechoslovakia, was delayed by rain with Austin leading 5-4 in the first set.
