Coalfield promising
PA New Plymouth Mines Department prospecting teams working in rugged country in north Taranaki have confirmed the potential of the Mokau coalfield to supply a big thermal power station. The department’s senior geologist in Wellington, Mr Phil Taylor, said that while prospecting information gained so far had still to be fully evaluated, early indications were very promising. Not only was the coal
suitable for power generation but mines staff were looking at the possibility of producing petrol and other fuels from a liquid extract. Mr Taylor said that the field had a potential for both underground and opencast mining. Early tests of the coal indicated that it had about a 10 per cent higher heat value than high quality coal from the Huntly area with a lower ash content but slightly more sulphur.
