Land may be bought for reserve

The Christchurch City Council’s reserve development fund might be used to buy vacant land in Addington for a public reserve. The council’s parks and recreation committee said yesterday that 0.61 ha of land should be bought in the block bounded by Disraeli, Antigua, and Braddon streets if an agreement could be reached with the landowner, Victoria Square Estates, Ltd. on a mixture of industrial, park

and residential uses for the property. Councillors want a reserve shape that will allow the reserve to act as a buffer between the future industrial use and nearby houses. The ' City Council earlier rejected a proposal by the landowner to change the I.Bha block’s zoning from residential to industrial. Part of the block may be rezoned to industrial, but

councillors have not yet agreed on a plan. Addington is the council’s first priority for an area where more open space is sought for the public. The committee's chairman, Cr Noala Massey, said the neighbourhood was "a very sad area at the moment.” Cr A. J. Graham said there was an equal need for open space in Linwood and Phillipstown.
