The day in Parliament
PA Wellington The annual reports of the Portage, Waitakere, and Porirua licensing trusts were tabled whpn Parliament sat at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. Mrs Ann Hercus (Lab., Lyttelton) gave notice of her intention to introduce the Wage-Price Freeze Repeal Bill. Ten other notices of motion were tabled by members. Mr 'G. T. Knapp (Socred East Coast Bays) introduced the Lead Free Fuels Bill but was unable to obtain a seconder for its referral to a select committee. The bill was set down for a second reading. The Budget debate resumed with Messrs T. J. Young (Lab.. Eastern Hutt), D. C. McKinnon (Nat., Albany) and S. J. Rodger (Lab., Dunedin North) speaking before the house adjourned for dinner at 5.30 p.m. The house resumed at 7.30 p.m. when the Budget debate continued.
Speakers were the Minister of Defence, Mr Thomson, Ms Fran Wilde (Lab., Wellington Central), the Minister of Justice, Mr McLay, Mr R. O. Douglas (Lab., Manurewa) and the Acting Prime Minister, Mr Maclntyre. The Opposition lost its bid for a no-confidence motion, 34-37, and the Appropriation Bill was set down for committal on the next sitting day. The House rose at 10.21 p.m.
