Race leader quits
NZPA Newport. Rhode Island Major structural damage has forced an American sailor. David White, to abandon a single-handed round-the-world race while leading the field of 14 yachts, race officials said.
James Roos, director of the 8.0. C. Challenge race, said White, aged 37. of St Petersburg. Florida, called by radio-telephone to say a bulkhead in his 17-metre yacht Gladiator had cracked in three places and he was heading for Miami.
