Rattray’s second title

Kate Rattray continued her domination of the Air New Zealand Alpine Trophy, winning the women's slalom at the Mount Hutt ski-field yesterday. Miss Rattray, winner of the giant slalom on Monday, easily won the slalom event from another Canterbury competitor, Mandy Vryenhoek, after her nearest rival, Christine Grant (Southern Districts) crashed heavily on the first run. the men’s event was won by Bruce Grant (Queenstown), who was almost two seconds faster than Nelson's Mark Fulton, with Richard Harrison third, a further 3Vz seconds behind. Marcus Hubrich, winner of the men’s giant slalom, who started as pre-race favourite for yesterday’s event, crashed at the fifth gate on the first run and took no further part in the event. Excellent entries were received for both the men’s and women's events with 103

men and 27 women starting, the highest number so far on the national circuit, which is being held at five different venues.

The future of New Zealand skiing would appear to be assured with the results in the minor places, of both events. Richard Harrison and Graeme Goodwin, members of the national B team, filled third and fourth place with two under-16s, David Menzies and Nils Coberger, filling the next two places. The minor placings in the women’s event were filled with girls under 17. Fiona Boyer finished third, with the 13-year-old Adele Coberger and the 14-year-old Sarah Caseley filling the next two places. Although a strong wind was blowing across the course it had little effect on the skiers and most competitors said that the course was the best they had encountered on the circuit. Yesterday’s event was the

last chance for skiers to compete under, race conditions before the New Zealand championships, which start at Queenstown’s Coronet Peak at the week-end. Results:
