Addington market Big yarding causes drop in prime sheep prices

Big yardings of prime sheep caused prices to .fall at the Addington market yesterday. Selling continued’ to almost 6 p.m. as auctioneers cleared the large number of prime ewes. Values for old ewes and prime lambs were down about $2 compared, with last week. Prime cattle, however, had another strong sale and values improved slightly. Prime Lambs A big yarding and mixed quality contributed to a decline in prime lamb values by about $2. The market started well below last week's prices, improved mid-way through the sale, but declined near the end. The bulk of the yarding comprised light lambs and few butcher-quality lambs were offered. Spring lambs sold to $25. The yarding totalled 1769, compared with 1634 last week. One buyer bought a large proportion of the yarding. Quality continued to be good, considering the dry conditions, and several pens of excellent steers were offered. The top price was $566 for an ’ Angus-Hereford cross steer sold by L. M. and C. J. Varney (Ashburton). Ten 2-year-old steers from 0. H. T. Williams (Robinsons Bay) made from $542 to $558.
