Some abusing ‘recycling’

About 37 per cent of Christchurch residents have used City Council rubbish recycling collections, but some are trying to abuse the system. They put out materials that cannot.be recycled. Yesterday, the resource recovery committee was told that 40- per cent of the material collected had to be rejected. “It is not uncommon to find potato peelings and garden waste hidden in a carton under a layer of newspaper." said a report from the Deputy General manager and City Engineer, Mr P. G.

Secular. The City Council would follow up cases where householders were trying to take advantage of the system, which provides a separate collection of recyclable materials on normal rubbish collection days. Some material is badly presented for recycling collections. For instance, tins are supposed to be washed and flattened. From July to August, the recycling collection scheme cost the council $34,604 in plant, wages, materials and overheads. It brought in $2555 in materials sold.
