Doctor’s licence revoked

NZPA Boston A New Zealander practising as a doctor in the United States has had his licence revoked by the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Medicine after being jailed for six months for raping a nurse. Eugene Sherry is serving a prison sentencee with two other doctors found guilty on the same charge. The are Arif Hussain and Alan Lefkowitz, who also have had their licences revoked. The board, which includes Jour doctors, acted on the

recommendation of a hearing examiner. Mr Joseph Dicarlo. who said that the convictions undermined public confidence in the medical profession and showed a lack of moral character on the part of the three doctors. The doctors were accused of forcing the nurse, who worked at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, to leave a party in Boston and then raping her at the seaside community of Rockport in September, 1980. “When I think of a physician, I think of a healer.

someone the people put trust in and depend on. The public would be outraged if the board finds that you can be a rapist and a physician." said Mr James Barrett, a lawyer for the board. Mr Robert Bradley, the executive secretary to the board, said that the doctors could apply to have their licences reinstated after a year, but he noted that the board was now acting more frequently to discipline Massachusetts doctors, having revoked six licences already this year.
