Gareth away to Sydney

PA Invercargill Gareth Cotton, who has leukaemia, flew from Christchurch early yesterday for vital bone-marrow surgery in Sydney. The rest of the Cotton family, of Mataura, went with him.

Gareth, aged five, will undergo surgery in the PrinCe of Wales Hospital. He was accompanied by his parents, Florence and David Cotton, his sister, Rebekah, aged seven, and two brothers, Adam, aged two, and Damian, aged four.

Either his father or Damian will be the donor of the replacement bone marrow.

The Social Welfare Department has given the family a $20,000 grant, and a public appeal, launched by the Mataura Lions Club to help pay for the trip, raised more than $27,800.
