U.S. Open tennis
NZPA New York Australia's Mark Edmondson and Mexico’s Raul Ramirez were upset by outsiders yesterday in’ the second round of the U.S. Open tennis championships. The thirteenth-seeded Edmondson fell to Matt Doyle, who is ranked 113th in the world. 1-6, 7-6. 7-5, 6-2. while Ramirez, seeded fifteenth, was ousted by Schalk Van der Merwe. of South Africa, ranked 168th internationally. 6-2, 6-3, 5-7. 6-4. Edmondson and Ramirez became the third and fourth seeded men to be eliminated in the 13day, 1.5 million dollar tournament at the U.S. national tennis centre. Fifth-seeded Vitas Gent-
laitis and seventh-seed, Jose-Luis Clerc. of Argentina, were ousted in the opening round. On the women’s side, tenthseeded Barbara Potter followed twelfth seed Billie Jean King to the sidelines, when she lost to Rosalyn Fairbank, of South Africa, 6-4, 6-1. Besides the top-seeded John McEnroe. Gene Mayer (6), Yannick Noah of France (9). Eliot Teltscher (8). Mats Wilander (11) and Roscoe Tanner (16) also advanced on the men’s side, while Chris Evert-Lloyd (second seed), fifth-seeded Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia, Andrea Leand (15) and Zina Garrison had victories in women’s play.
