Marac case decision later

PA Auckland Judge Imrie yesterday reserved decision on charges laid against the Marac Building Society under the Gaming and Lotteries Act. 1977. Pleas of not guilty were entered in the District Court at Auckland to 10 charges of organising an illegal lottery, known as the “Home Run Scheme,” and to 10 charges of organising an illegal game of chance, known by the same name. The alleged offences. occurred between August 1981. and March this year.

The charges relate to eight monthly draws in which people with a minimum balance of $lO lodged with the society were automatically included. Winners could choose a television set or a dishwasher, and they were entered in a grand draw for a $70,000 home in Auckland's East Coast Bays. Judge Imrie set a nominal date of September 29 to deliver his decision. Mr John Henry, Q.C., with' Mr C. J. Allan appeared for the society. Mr Philip Morgan represented the Department of Internal Affairs.
