Knife, pistol charges
PA Wellington A Shannon bricklayer appeared in the District Court at Wellington yesterday as a result of an armed offenders squad call-out .in central Wellington on Thursday. Dennis Raymond O’Callaghan. aged 30. represented by Mr Mike Bungay, faced three charges when he appeared before Judge P. J. Bate. They were. that on Thurs-
day he was in possession of an offensive weapon — a knife — in circumstances that prima facie showed an intention to use it to commit an offence involving fear of violence; that he presented at John Anthony Lyon, a gasoperated slug pistol which in the circumstances was likely to lead Mr Lyon to believe that it was a firearm; and that he did possess a firearm, namely a gas-operated slug pistol, except for some
lawful proper and sufficient purpose. ’ Mr Bungay sought a remand, without plea or election, for three weeks on bail. The Judge remanded the accused on bail of $750. with a surety of $750, to appear again in the District Court on September 24. He ordered O'Callaghan to report twice weekly to the Shannon police. Sergeant I. Carmichael appeared for the police.
