Bridge buckle fixed
PA Auckland A buckle which developed in the Auckland Harbour Bridge 12 years ago was quietly and successfully repaired during the next year. This has been revealed by the Assistant Commissioner of Works, Mr R. G. Norman, who said that the inside of one of the new extension girders had buckled “several inches out of line.” During the design stages of the extensions, the Ministry of Works had forced the firm of British consultants to modify the plans, because it felt the depth of the centre span was insufficient. Because of restrictions on
them by the Auckland Harbour Board and the National Roads Board, the designers had allowed only for a 9ft'6in depth. “We insisted the depth be increased, and it was to 13ft 6in,” he said. Mr Norman believes that the conservatism shown by the Ministry in assessing the plans may have saved the day. He brought the issue into ' the open at a convention of the Institute of Public Administration in Dunedin last week, citing it as an example of the importance of the Ministry as an assessor of private-sector developments.
