Energy Plan
Sir.—The 1982 Energy Plan purports to justify continued work on the Clyde Dam and other extravagant energy projects. The Energy Plan is based on the assumption of a 15 per cent growth in population in the next 20 years. But the population is not increasing at all at present. The Education Department' says that school rolls will continue to fall for the forseeable future. Aha! The Energy Departmentthinks the adult population will rise much faster than the adolescent population will fall. According to the energy planners, domestic electricity consumption will rise at 1.6 per cent per annum. The Prime Minister, on the other hand, says his economic policies are designed to reduce real incomes. Now the devilishly clever plan unfolds. The Government sees us giving birth to 20-year-olds who will use electricity instead of bread and butter. Will robots be counted in the next census? — Yours, etc P. T. McMAHON. September 1, 1982.
