Taxi-driver robbery alleged
PA Wellington Two men were remanded in custody for a week, without plea, when they appeared in the District Court at Wellington yesterday on a charge of aggravated robbery of a taxi-driver. Judge Gilbert refused an application for bail on behalf of Mathew Edward Tawhi Te Maa Chase, aged 31, unemployed. of no fixed abode, and Michael Te Aroha Maru. aged 22. an unemployed musician. also of no fixed abode. The men are jointly
charged that on August 30. while armed with a firearm, they robbed Augustus George Suhr of a Ford Falcon motor-vehicle valued at $25,001). The police opposed bail, and it was refused by the Judge after a hearing in chambers. Chase appeared late in the morning. His right foot was heavily bandaged and he was using crutches. The charge was laid indictably and a date for a depositions hearing has still to be set.
