Meters for airport park

Parking meters will be installed in a new short-term car-park in front of Christchurch Airport’s terminal building for use by vehicles requiring short-term parking for more than three minutes. The. front section of the existing airport public carpark would be converted to provide 64 metered spaces in an area that, at present accommodated about 56. Meter charges would be 10c for 15 minutes, with a maximum of 30 minutes, the Christchurch City Council’s public utilities committee decided yesterday.

“For several years the air- ■ port has seen severe vehicle congestion in front of . the terminal building, especially at times of peak air travel,” said the , airport director, Mr M. W. Atkinson. “Most visitors arrive in private cars and need parking near the terminal for about 10 minutes. .But the ' only alternative to the threeminute kerbside parking in front of the terminal building is( the public car-park, which has a minimum charge of 40c and which is usually full near the front.” said' Mr Atkinson.
