Prince Edward in N.Z. on Sept. 7
PA Wellington The Governor-General, Sir David Beattie, confirmed yesterday that ' Prince Edward would arrive in New Zealand on September 7. Sir David said Prince Edward would arrive in Auckland on a direct Air New Zealand flight from London, and would transfer immediately to an R.N.Z.A.F. Andover flight to Wellington. On his arrival in Wellington at 8.50 a.m. he will be met by the Governor-General and the Acting Prime Minister, Mr Maclntyre. The Prince will spend a few days at Government House before travelling to Wanganui Collegiate School for the start of the third term on September 13.
“Prince Edward's visit to New Zealand is very much a private one and there will be no formal engagements," said Sir David. “He will be a day student house tutor at Selwyn House and will assist the house master in the general running of the house. “He will do some classroom teaching under the guidance of experienced senior masters, but will be particularly involved with a wide range of extra-curricu-lar activities at the school,” said Sir David. “It is the Queen's wish that the Prince’s visit to New Zealand be a private one and regarded as an extension to his education, although he will meet many New Zealanders during his stay here.
“I am sure New Zealanders generally, and people in Wanganui in particular, will welcome His Royal Highness in the same way as any other young man who has completed his secondary schooling in Britain and spent time in a college before his entry into a British university,” Sir David said.
