Aegean should extend record

Special correspondent Wellington The seemingly ageless chaser Aegean has such a wonderful record in Steeplechases at Gisborne that he could win his eighth race when he contests the City of Gisborne Steeplechase on the opening day of the club’s spring meeting at Makaraka today. Aegean has won each of his last six races over the Makaraka country and he looks well placed for another victory today, the first leg of the T.A.B. treble.

Aegean, though, has a useful group of challengers. Reklaw has fine form over hurdles but his 'chasing attempts have produced sufficient to suggest he could be the hardest for Aegean to beat.

Sugarmugundi is a relative newcomer to ’chasing but he has already made a marked contribution with wins at Trentham and Awapuni and he ran second to Bymai in the Homeby Steeplechase at Riccarton in July. The T.A.B. double today is on the Dick Twistleton Handicap and the Gisborne Sheepfarmers’ Handicap. Le Ana, already a winner on the epurse. will be attempting to score her fourth win from five recent starts in the Twistleton Handicap. She was a winner at Wanganui and Trentham and after a failure at Hastings scored a good win at NewPlymouth a couple of weeks ago. The topweight, Glasgow Boy has won from 1200 m to 1400 m and it would not surprise to see him make the transition to 2000 m today satisfactorily.

Lance has been disappointing lately but he will be more suited to the firmer ground likely today. Manuaroha was a winner at the Hawke's Bay Hunt Club’s meeting last month and will not be without her chance.

The Sheepfarmers’ Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double, has three runners from the Rogerson Stable heading the handicap. Travolta is always good value fresh and could be the best of them. Harper’s Bazaar has not raced for more than 12 months but won her last two on end in the autumn of 1981. She could be ready to make a big impression again. Bottle Drive is a good galloper and is capable on firm tracks, while Really, True’s only failure of late was at Paeroa last week.
