Jim Collett Anticipate’s Ashburton rider

Anticipate will be an inform mount for Jim Collett when the Gore horseman resumes race riding at Ashburton on Saturday.

Collett, the South Island's most successful race rider last season, was out of action because of injury during the Grand National meeting. It was at the Grand National meeting that Anticipate won the Selwyn Handicap at his first start from John Bourne’s Riccarton stable. The former northerner shaped as if he had made good progress in the meantime when he sprinted with his stablemate, Handsome Heir, on the plough at Riccarton yesterday.

They ran in from the 800 m in 50.95. winding up for the final 600 m in an impressive 35.15. Conditions were ideal. The plough gave fast footing, and the alternative track, the No. 1 grass, made it possible for “low flying." Firefly, one of Anticipate's rivals in the first leg of the Ashburton T.A.B. double, scorched over 1400 m on the plough in lmin 265, keeping up an efficient work rate after hurrying over the opening 800 m in 49.55.

Chiasso reeled off 600 m on the plough in 35.85. a gallop that will keep him to the forefront for the first of the maiden events at Ashburton.

Magellan returned 36s for his 600 m. and went about his work with characteristic keenness. The Winter Cup winner is being pointed for the weight-for-age sprint at the Timaru meeting on September 18, and might race on the Southland spring circuit before the New Zealand Cup meeting. Bilberry sprinted 800 m in 51.45, the final 600 m in 37.35. She looks strong and bright for her test against the sprinters at Ashburton.

Mhorso ran in from the 1400 m in lmin 325, the last 800 m in 53.25.

Indigod sprinted from the 600 m in 375. He will resume at the Timaru meeting. Ay Em also returned 375, and Carness followed in 38s. Nicachar cleared out from Babooshka while running 600 m in 35.65.

The Clansman did well to record 35.7 s in a solo 600 m. Macho Man and Watese followed in 38.2.

Bev’s Girl recorded 49.8 s for 800 on the No. 1 grass. Peter Jones's pair. Third Degree and Weinmeister, followed in 48.85. Saccone and Kapitea hurried over 1400 m in lmin 275. the last 800 m in 48s. Rapier Lad led Silver Gale by a length and a half finishing 800 m in 49.55. Auchentoshan and a Blue Vermillion colt from Bevan Laming’s team, tore into their work from the 600 m and came up with 34. Kelly Robe and Accelerate

finished their 800 m strongly in 47.2. Silver Print and Samazam recorded 495, the last 600 m in 365. Damazam will run in the Ashburton Cup next week, and Peter Jones plans to send him to Wingatui for the Otago spring meeting. Fufaster and Zac Fisher hurried in from the 600 m in 35.25. Treacle and Astral Row looked sharp in their lead-up gallop to Ashburton. They returned an impressive 465.
