Tragic loss
A highly-promising cycling career was cut short with the tragically-early death last week of George McAloon, a strapping 17-year-old who had made his mark in a very short time. After a very productive first road season, in which he finished second in the Healing boys’ tour, young McAloon was surprisingly omitted from the Canterbury team for the national road championships after a mediocre Canterbury title ride. He underlined the folly of
that a month later when he won the South Island 24km championship convincingly. That progress was maintained on the track, and McAloon had the best allround record in the Canterbury championships. He won the 450 m title and was a member of the Mairehau team which won the Italian pursuit. McAloon was also runnerup in both the individual pursuit and the 2000 m - both times to the Southlander. Stephen Harcourt — and third in the 4000 m.
