Increased coal shipments likely
Coal exports from Lyttelton are expected to increase to more than 400,000 tonnes a year by 1983 and up to 500,000 tonnes a year within five years, according to an engineer with, the Lyttelton Harbour Board, Mr B. Knowles.
When the trade began in 1980 export tonnages were expected to reach a total of 600,000 tonnes a year over three years, said Mr Knowles.
Isaac Construction, Ltd. which has the contract for supplying loaders for the coal trade, has taken delivery of another 30 tonne Fiat Allis 945 B front-end loader. This loader, which normally takes a 6.5-yard loading bucket, has been fitted with a 13yard bucket. It now has the capacity:to load'abolit 10 tonnes of coal with each “bite.” % More than $2 million has been invested in coal export by the harbour board and Isaac Construction. The board has already spent more than $1.5 million on handling equipment and the new loader, being brought in to speed up loading, costs $400,000. Mr Knowles expects the new loader to increase loading rates by between 30 per cent and 50 per cent in the. next year. Coal exports make up about 15 per cent of total exports from Lyttelton and this figure is expected to increase. About 1500 tonnes of coal is railed each day
from the Stockton, Reefton and Denniston mines.
