Citizenship details
PA Wellington Internal Affairs Department officials are drawing up procedures for Western Samoans .to apply for New Zealand citizenship, and hope to have them complete next week. All Samoans living in New Zealand will soon be given the right to become New Zealand citizens under a bill now before Parliament.
The bill was drafted to give effect to an agreement with the Government of Western Samoa . and will overrule a Privy Council ruling that all Samoans born between 1926 and 1949 were New Zealand citizens. An executive office in the department, Mr Bryan Fry, said it was hoped that the citizenship procedure would be completed by next Tuesday.
