Action Directe chief set to talk
NZPA-Reuter Paris The leader of the extremist group Action Directe has offered to appear before a judge to answer questions on recent anti-Jewish attacks, said the. police yesterday. The police believe that the group was behind several of the attacks, and have been hunting its leader, Jean-Marc Rouillan, since he said that his group was responsible for some of the incidents.
Mr Joseph Franceschi, appointed the country's security chief after the spate of violence, briefed his officials yesterday as nervous Parisians raised numerous false bomb alarms. - President Francois Mitterrand gave Mr Franceschi the new post of Minister of State for Public Security after the attacks, some of which were blamed on Middle Eastern groups. Six people were killed in a Jewish restaurant two weeks ago. The police said that Parisians raised 85 false bomb alarms.
The police said that a judge received a letter from Rouillan saying the Action Directe leader would face questioning now that the atmosphere in France was calmer and he had contacted a lawyer.
