Typhoon Ellis kills 2
NZPA Tokyo Typhoon Ellis, with winds of 126 km/h, ripped across the eastern coast of Japan’s southernmost main island of Kyushu yesterday, killing two people and injuring two others, said the police. The typhoon centre was north of Kyushu’s Beppu Bay and was moving north at the speed of 36 km/h, said weathermen. Ellis dumped up to 700 mm
of rain in eastern Kyushu, causing widespread flooding. Twenty-six landslides were reported in Kyushu and Western Honshu, Japan’s main island, said the police. Areas hardest hit were Otira, Miyazaki, Kagoshima and the Ehime prefectures. Three homes were destroyed, two others reported damaged and 300 houses and other structures flooded, said the police.
