Kaiapoi-Chch transport meeting

The future of the public transport service between Kaiapoi and Christchurch will be discussed at a public meeting at, Kaiapoi on Monday evening.

The discussion will follow a general meeting of the Kaiapoi Ratepayers and Residents’ Association, to be held in the lounge of the Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club at 7.30 p.m. Only members of the association will be allowed to attend the first meeting. For that reason, the association, which has organised the discussion on the bus service, intends to begin the public meeting at 8.30 p.m. Arrangements have been made for representatives of the Christchurch Transport Board and Travelfar Coaches, Ltd, to, address the public meeting. The secretary of the Hospital and Hotel Workers' Union, Mr J. Anderson, will also speak on the topic, “The Unions.”

The association is confident that its membership will finally exceed 1000. When that happens the association will seek affiliation with similar associations in Canterbury. This is indicated in a report on the association’s activities. The association has 834 members, with recruiting still to be done between Fuller Street and Ohoka Road.

Some executive members of the association have been making trials of refuse recycling and a film of their efforts will be available at the meeting. Poster competitions on vandalism and resource recovery (refuse recycling) have been conducted by the association.

The need to increase the association’s subscription will be discussed at the meeting. The subscription has' been $1 since 1977 and at the “very least” it will be recommended to go to $2.
