Ferro-silicon industry interest
PA Dunedin The aluminium company, Pechiney, is interested in starting a ferrosilicon industry in Otagc or Southland, says the Minister of Energy, Mr Birch. Company representatives had expressed interest in the area’s silicon resources after he had raised the matter with them, he said. The suggestion had not been made as an alternative to an aluminium smelter. Pechiney, a partner in the proposed Aramoana smelter, had interests in the industry in Europe, he said. However, Mr Birch said he was not confident that the world economy could support the manufacture of ferrosilicon in New Zealand at this stage.
