Japanese sample Maori culture
When a Japanese reporter, Naoki Morimoto, wrote an article for his newspaper about a group of Japanese children who had become penfriends with children in Christchurch; New Zealand, he called it “Friendship beyond the seas.” That friendship was taken a step further, this week when 16 Japanese schoolchildren, four parents, and two teachers arrived in Christchurch to spend a week with the children of Elmwood Normal School. They were welcomed to the school yesterday morning The visitors, aged between nine and 12, returned the welcome by singing two songs in English. They were then taught a Maori haka, poi, and action songs by Mr Bill Hohepa, of Christchurch Teachers’ College. Mr Morimoto has. accompanied the children to-report on their visit for his news-, paper, the- “Tokushima Press.” He is one of 80 reporters working, for the newspaper' • It is the only newspaper in the Tokushima area, which has a population of about 830,000. The children and Mr Morimoto come from Itano, which has a population of 10.000.- •
