Marsden scaffolders back at work

PA Whangarei Scaffolders returned to work yesterday after a 24hour stoppage at the Marsden Point oil refinery expansion project, where union representatives assert that the management is running a blacklist. The 10 scaffolders on the site walked off on Tuesday in protest against the hiring of two scaffolders, one from Wellington and one from Auckland, instead of one from Whangarei as proposed by the men on site.

The' Northland field officer of the Labourers’ Union, Mr Trevor Giles, said yesterday that two or three scaffolders in Whangarei were available for work at Marsden Point.

“Unfortunately, JV2 (the contractor) has decided it does not want to hire these men,” said Mr Giles. “Obviously the company is running a blacklist. We know of-some labourers who have had their names down for 18 months, but the company has ignored them and gone further south to hire men.” JV2’s industrial relations general manager, Mr Ron Richards, said the only job applications from local, certified scaffolders came from men already employed.
