Bedroom on wheels on tour
Miss Stephanie Harper, a Railways traffic assistant, enjoys a coffee break in the comfortable surroundings of a railway waggon (at right) which has been converted to display bedroom furniture.
It is part of a sales promotion on wheels touring New Zealand which reached Christchurch yesterday, showing the Actil range of bedwear distributed by the
Australian-based firm, Bradmill Industries.
For the six-week tour, two Z waggons were painted in the Actil colours of cerise, red, and black and the interior was transformed with wall-to-wall carpet and plush bedroom furniture. At each of the 14 centres where the waggons will stop, retailers will be invited to view the displays. Mr Philip Lawson, manager of the textile division of Bradmill, said the tour had been a great success and it was now planned that after
the waggons reached Invercargill they would stop off at many centres on the way back to Auckland and allow the public to view the display. Actil thought of the promotion in February, and it has taken six months to bring the campaign together wiith the help of the Railways Corporation. It took about a week to convert each of the waggons into a showpiece. In total Actil has spent almost $10(1,000 on the cam-
paign. The promotion has not only been successful for Actil, but the Railways has received a spinoff with other firms interested in conducting similar New Zealandwide tours. Originally the waggons were meant to have stayed in Christchurch for three days but this has been cut short by a day because of delays in Blenheim earlier in the week when a union dispute halted all train movements.
