Waitaki loses final
PA Auckland Mt Albert Grammar School (Auckland) yesterday beat Waitaki Boys High School (Oamaru), 11-4, in a free-moving game at Eden Park to become the national secondary schools rugby champion. Mt Albert had to wait for a last-minute try by the prop, Sie Solomona before the L and P Cup was secure. For much of the match the Waitaki forwards were in
command. There was untidy lineout play by both packs, but Waitaki had the edge in second-phase situations. Waitaki, which made the final on the toss of a coin after drawing 12-12 with Western Heights (Rotorua) on Friday, was unlucky that its goal-kicker,' Cliff McNally, had an off day. He missed a conversion and three penalty goals. Western Heights beat Rathkeale College (Masterton) 16-4 in a curtain-raiser.
