Turner ton

NZPA London The New Zealand batsman, Glenn Turner, continued to show the form which has made him leader of the English county batting averages when he tore the Yorkshire attack apart while scoring 105 for Worcestershire in a Natwest Trophy second round match.

Turner’s century was completed in 155 minutes and included a six and seven fours as Worcestershire raced to 286 for five in its allotted 60 overs.

At 105, Turner was bowled by, of all people, the former England opener, Geoff Boycott, who has few pretensions with the ball. But Ted Hemsley followed Turner for a duck giving Boycott two wiekets in an over which also included two wides and four byes. Meanwhile a sparkling 65 by the New Zealand test opener, John Wright, failed to save Derbyshire from an early exit from the trophy competition which it won on its inauguration last year. Wright’s innings helped Derbyshire to 239 for five off its 60 overs but Hampshire replied with. 242 for four off just 56.4 overs.

Wright’s current good form, has seen him elevated to third in the batting list with an average of 71.88.
