Removal of trees
Sir,—l heartily endorse Mrs F. M. Shaw’s deep concern (July 13) for the future of the trees in our city’s residential areas. For too long screaming chainsaws have wreaked havoc, felling and disfiguring magnificent specimens while whole stands of trees have been savagely cut back — even wiped out. Thoughtfully planted by our forebears, they have been long years reaching maturity and are now being thoughtlessly ravaged. I heard the distressing story recently of a young couple in their first home, being asked to cut back the sole lovely tree growing entirely on their property, by a neighbour who had decided to sell off a section. This is bad news! I too would like to know what positive action the authorities are taking to preserve the arboreous beauty of Christchurch.—Yours, etc., JENNIFER STRANG. July 12, 1982.
