Maldives joins C’wealth
NZPA London The Republic of the Maldives, in the Indian Ocean, has been admitted as a special member of the Commonwealth and becomes its forty-seventh member, the Commonwealth SecretaryGeneral. Sir Shridath Ramphal. has announced .after consultation ' with Commonwealth heads of government. including the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon).
Special members enjoy all the benefits of Commonwealth membership but do not attend full meetings of heads of government. The other special members are Nauru. Tuvalu, and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
