Danes win badminton
The New Zealand invitation badminton team emerged from its clash with the Danish invitation team with some pride intact after three fine doubles wins .at Skellerup Hall last evening- - • • A ■ In the first four matches, all singles, the New Zealanders, all members of the national side for the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane in October, were no match for the Danes. Only Peter Whiting and Steven Wilson in their singles with Mark Christiansen and Marten Svarrer offered resistance. Nettie Nielsen against Robin Denton and Dorte Kjaer against Allison Sinton, were both impressive winners. In the two mixed doubles, and men’s doubles, however, there was a definite air of determination in the New Zealanders' play. Both Wilson and Denton, and Phillip 1 Home and Sinton had to overcome problems before, beating their opponents' in straight
games. Wilson took Svarrer to setting in their first game, Wilson fighting back from 6-13 to level at 1414 only to lose 17-15 in the threepoint setting. In . the second game Svarrer allowed Wilson only four points. Results:— . Singles.-Men: M. Svarrer (Denmark) beat S. Wilson (New -1 Zealand), 17-15, 15-4; M. Christi-' ansen (Denmark) beat P. Whiting (New Zealand), 15-9, .. 15-8. Women: N. Nielsen (Denmark) beat R. Denton (New Zealand), - 11-7, 11-1; D. Kjaer (Denmark) beat R. Sinton (New Zealand), 11-2,11-2. . Doubles —Men: Wilson and P.; Horne (New Zealand) beat; Svarrer and Christiansen (Denmark), 15-3, 17-15. Women: Kjaer and Nielsen (Denmark) beat Den-." ton and Sinton (New Zealand). 15-: 7, 15-11. Mixed: Wilson and Denton beat Christiansen and Kjaer, 15-2,15-13; Home and.Sinton beat? Svarrer and Nielsen; 15^11,17-16.
