‘Apply now for passports’
The passport office of the Department of Internal Affairs in Christchurch has urged people planning to travel abroad in the August school holidays' to apply now for their passports. The office was already experiencing the usual seasonal increase in passport applications from people intending to travel in the school holidays. August 20 to September 6, said the department’s district officer (Mr L. W. Skerten) yesterday.
“This means that people should allow the full 21 days mentioned on the application form to ensure that their passports are received in time," he said. “Time taken to get the necessary documents from the Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marri-
ages is in addition to this.” Genuine emergency applications would be dealt with according to their individual merits, he said. In Auckland, the rush for passports has been so great that urgent applications are not being dealt with, according to a newspaper report. Mr Skerten said that the number of passports being issued was still considerably higher than it had been before Australia began requiring the document in May last year.
In June, 1980, the Christchurch office issued 952 passports. In June last year it issued 5470, and in June this year 3048.
The office handles passports for the area between the Waitaki River and the top of the South Island.
