Unemployment figures rejected

Parliamentary reporter Seasonal factors were not the main cause of a record June unemployment figure, according to the Labour spokesman on employment, Mr T. K. Burke (West Coast). He accused the Minister of Labour (Mr Bolger) of misleading the public by making such a claim. The increase in total unemployment through May and June, 1981, had been 37 per cent, but in the same two months in 1982 it had increased by 49 per cent. That difference could not

be explained by seasonal factors. Mr Burke said. Further, it was still too early for seasonal factors to have a significant effect, as freezing works only began to run down their killing season from August. The Minister of Labour could not admit that unemployment was increasing. Mr Burke said. 'Mr Bolger had said that, unemployment had peaked in June, 1981, but with more than 77,000 registered unemployed and on special work, there had been a 15 per cent increase in 1982, he said.
