Change of river course

PA . Dunedin River diversion at the Clyde dam site will begin today, according to the senior construction engineer, Mr Howard Justice. Preparation for the diver-

sion started last week when the pumps keeping the channel dry during construction were switched off.> Water flooded the channel and by the week-end had risen to the same level as the river.

Earlier this week the riverbanks blocking'the ends of the. diversion channel were removed, allowing some water to flow through the sluices..

Between today and Saturday/ . heavy earthmoving machinery will concentrate on : pushing stockpiled rock across the river to force all of the flow through the diversion channel. This. will be the start of the upstream coffer dam. Another coffer dam will be built opposite the downstream end of. the diversion channel.

The pond formed between these two dams will - be pumped dry, and gravel material will be excavated from the riverbed and used to complete the coffer. dams to their full height. Each dam will contain about 100,000 cubic metres of material and -rise 10 metres above river level. ' ;

The site preparation for the Clyde dam began in 1977. River diversion is one of the main construction stages in the building of what will be New Zealand's biggest'concrete dam.. ?
