Scallop fisheries
Wellington reporter Commercial scallop fisheries, .other than in NelsonMarlborough, will open from Julyi-45 until February 14, 1983, but only amateur harvesting would be permitted in the Nelson-Marlborough fishery between those dates, said the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries (Mr Maclntrye). Surveys had shown that Nelson-Marlborough . scallop populations were still low and most scallops were small. Commercial fishing was not desirable if the population were to be allowed to regenerate, he said. Amateur fishing had little effect on the fishery as a whole: Amateurs were well controlled by the quota of 20 scallops a person a day, and by the minimum size limit of 100 mm.
