Ice, snow make roads dangerous
Ice. snow, and bitter cold continued to affect roads in Canterbury, Central Otago, Otago, and Fiordland last evening. "Black ice" and snow made chains essential on State highway 73 in the Otira gorge. the Automobile Association (Canterbury) reported. Motorists were urged to use extreme care between Porters Pass and Cass, where there was ice in patches. Chains were essential on the Lewis Pass highway where it was snowing heavily. Frozen snow made care essential on both the Lindis Pass and the Pigroot, said the association. State highway 87 at Middlemarch, Central Otago, and State highway 89, over the Crown Range, were both closed by snow and ice last evening. The Automobile Association (Otago) reported that care was essential on the motorway north of Dunedin and on the southern approaches to the city, after light snowfalls yesterday afternoon.
