General forecast: A very cold south-westerly airstream, should persist over New Zealand., Showers are expected in the east and south, of the South ■ Island, with snow to low levels. However in the west of the South Island it • should be fine. Strong south-westerlies are expected in exposed eastern places, up to gale force at times about coastal Southland and Otago. Elsewhere the south-westerlies should be mainly fresh. District forecasts: Canterbury: Cold south-west-erlies, fresh at times about the coast; changeable, with squally showers and possibly hail; mainly fine inland with lighter winds. Marlborough: A few showers

about the ranges; showers spreading into eastern parts overnight with freshening south-wester-lies; mainly fine inland. Cold. Nelson: Showers about the ranges with some snow; fine elsewhere, cold, with . fresh south-westerlies. Buller: Fresh squally south westerlies at first witi occasional showers; becoming fine by morning winds decreasing; cold. Westland: South-westerlies fresh at times about the coast. Changeable about the coast with wintry showers but gradually clearing; mainly fine and cold inland. Outlook: Similar conditions in Canterbury; other districts mainly fine.
