Tour leader unchanged

NZPA Bordeaux Australia’s Phil Anderson still wears the over-all leader's yellow jersey in the Tour de France cycle race and yesterday even managed to increase his advantage over the hot favourite, Bernard Hinault. Because of time bonuses won in the intermediary sprints yesterday, Anderson increased his lead from 28 seconds to 44 seconds over the Frenchman.

Hinault, who won the Tour in great style ; last year, warned that it would be a different story in today’s individual time trial and that he would take at least one minute off Anderson. But Anderson’s team direc-

tor, Maurice de Muer, had other ideas and said he now had greater confidence in Anderson’s ability to cope with Hinault oyer the mountain stretches which start on Thursday.

Today’s stage, 148.2 km haul down the Atlantic coast from Saintes, gave the French their first stage win, with Pierre-Ramond Villemaine getting home narrowly ahead of the pack. He finished two seconds in front of the pack led by Sean Kelly of Ireland.

New Zealand's Eric McKenzie flew home for fifth, his best placing so far and one which lifted him into 75th nlace overall.
