Cattle, sheep prices steady

Big numbers of all classes of prime stock were yarded at the Addington market yesterday. Prime lamb values eased, but recent prices for cattle and sheep were maintained. Many of the lambs and sheep were lacking in condition as a result of the drought. The quality of the beef yarding was better than in recent weeks. Prime lambs. Lamb prices declined about $2 compared with recent sales. Reduced competition from freezing works buyers, which usually show considerable interest in the lighter lambs, contributed to the falling prices. Many of the lambs yarded were in light condition although several pens of heavy lambs were offered. R.B. Maw (Methven). who has supplied lambs of excellent quality to Addington for several weeks, had another good sale, receiving $32.20 to $34 80 for Romneys.

A feature of the market was the sale of four of this season's lambs which made from $2O to $22.20.

The yarding totalled 1399 compared with 152 last week. Values were:—Heavy lambs, to $34.80. Medium lambs.’s23 to $26. Light lambs. $l5 to $22.

Quality was much bet ter in the old ewe section and values remained steady. Top ewes, with a heavy covering of wool, often

The over-all quality of the yarding was better than last week with a larger proportion of well-finished cattle. Light heifers, showing plenty of condition. had another strong sale. The yarding totalled 336 compared with 304 last week. The top price of $570 was.paid for a Friesian steer sold on behalf of I. W. Muckle (Rakaia). An Angus-Hereford cross heifer from G. A. McVicar (Cashmere) made $426 and Angus cows from G. Gardner (Scargill) sold to $392. Steers and heifers to 220 kg sold for between 150 c and 156 c a kilogram, between 220 kg and 270 kg. from 154 c to 157 c. and over 270 kg lo 158 c. Store sheep A line of heavy annual draft Corriedale ewes which sold to $lB.BO was the highlight of the store sheep section. In-lamb ewes showing plenty of condition had a good sale, but the bulk of the yarding comprised light ewes which were suffering from the effects of the drought. Other sales included mixed-age Romneys at $12.80. and mixed-aged Corriedales at $9 and $16.80 (woolly). Although the over-all quality of lambs was poor, the store lamb market was reasonably strong. Fat Pigs Heavy porkers and light baconers showed little change in values compared with recent sales, but poor quality pigs were hard to sell. Light porkers were back $5 to $6 in value. The price of choppers remained steady. Few heavy choppers were yarded. Values were:-Light pork. $BO to $9O. Medium to heavy pork. $95 to $llO. Light to medium bacon. $ll5 to $l3O. Stores Pigs Values of store pigs remained sound throughout the sale.. although prices did not reach the high level of last week's sale. Large stores had the best of the market with good quality pigs exceeding $BO. In-pig sows did not sell as well as previous weeks and only the best made more than $260.
